Yes you do need a running instance of Microsoft SQL server, but there is a version of Microsoft SQL Server called MSDE, or more recently Express 2005, which can be installed without any additional cost. nFlow digital dictation is proven to perform perfectly with both versions with cases of up to 100 users running on it.
No. You can install MSDE/Express on Windows 2000/XP or Vista running on an ordinary desktop PC. The dictation audio files can be stored on any hard drive that is accessible by other PC's via the network. With this said you should remember that a desktop PC is not designed to act as a server and does not typically have the resilience features. Dictation has a tangible value so with the current cost of servers being very low you should always consider buying a server if you do not have one.
